PLENARY SESSIONS
23 november 2005
EDITO
One year ago, IDATE’s International Conference –
conducted under the banner: Internet Act II drew the conclusion
that the market's momentum sparked by ubiquitous IP and mobiles
also created growing uncertainties for telecom and media players’
business models. The goal this year is to further discussion on
this topic, and to home in on the crux of the matter by taking a
look at the issues created by the swift rise in bitrates being offered
to users.
Will the corollary of these technological performances be new value
placed on certain uses (which services? For what purpose? At what
price?…), and so ensuring customers’ lasting loyalty
and a return on the capital invested? What impact will this have
on future relations between network industries, applications industries,
service and distribution industries? Who will benefit from the changes
taking place in the value chain?
Having introduced the notion of Guest Country for the first time
this year, and having selected Japan for that honour, we hope to
benefit from the experience of one of the world’s most innovative
markets, and to further strengthen the international scope of both
our Conference and our Institute.

Selling access, selling services
Increasing competition is driving network operators to market services
other than access, while the growing ubiquity of IP is diversifying
the ways that the value chain is organised, and this for both fixed
and mobile networks...
Session
1- Multiplay on Broadband: first lessons and impact on the ARPU
Faced with the decline of wireline telephony, at a time of swift
growth and lively competition over high-speed, and even very high-speed
internet, ISPs are seeking to distinguish themselves and to create
value by incorporating an increasingly wide array of communication
and content services into their offer. How do these offers distinguish
themselves? What are the main problems that have been encountered
(negotiating audiovisual rights? Technical constraints?….)?
How profitable are they?

2- 3G, When media meets mobile
Mobile equipment levels have reached maturity in most Western
markets. Boosting, or even maintaining the sector’s revenues
appears to rely more and more on 3G’s ability to create services
that appeal to subscribers (music, games, videophony, TV and video,
etc.). At the same time, flat rate data tariffs are becoming increasingly
common, giving rise to questions over the most suitable business
models to use. What are the most promising experiments? Is there
a need for specific mobile internet business models?

Shaping the digital ecosystem
Building on the success of new digital communication products
(DVDs, digital cameras, flat screens, MP3 players…), there
is a burgeoning variety of initiatives that combine several services
(e.g. mobile phones with built-in MP3 players), and offers that
combine platforms ADSL-WiFi/mobile home gateway) and or platform
and content (iPod/iTunes). Having to contend with the erasure of
the lines that once defined the consumer electronics sector: who
will ensure the systems’ interoperability, rights management,
and the efficiency of the applications?
